Early Life and Inspiration

 

Born on 13 January 1986, he is the eldest of children of Dr Sanjay Gandhi. He was born to a nice and middle class family. His father just started his career in ophthalmology in 1987 and new practice, Sharmeel,  had a simple and modest early years. He remembers having yearned for things which a kid would always want, something like shoes with lights, electric sharpener. But during those years with the earning of not that level were always a dream.

 

But to him this was never a setback but an inspiration to get it and develop himself in someone who can fulfil these for his kids.

 

His inspirations were his father for the superb-surgeon he was and his Grand-father who he always endured for his ethics and his stature. His father once stated “Make a person your idol and follow him blindly.” His father did this for his mentor Shri of Sankara Nethralaya. But, Sharmeel did this for his father. 

 

Childhood and Schooling

 

Early childhood he studied in Amrut Jyoti for 2 years. Nursery and Junior KG. After that from Senior KG till 12th he studied in St. Xaviers Loyola school. St. Xaviers had him nurture his young years to be generous young man. With the moral science that was taught in the school being a person that every other person endeavor's was imbibed.

 

He was a favorite to all his teachers who taught him. There were many funny incidences that happened for the liking teachers had for him. Once he and 2 other colleagues had scored 36/40 in a subject. While his best friend had scored 40/40 but had total mistake which came to a total of 36/40. He went o the teacher and showed the totaling mistake. But his teacher didn’t like anybody scoring more than Sharmeel. So. He deducted 1/2 mark un 48 sums and made it actually 36/40. The overall schooling was fun.

 

Personal Life

 

He married his college sweetheart, who he met in NHL Municipal Medical College, Ahmedabad. Palak H Mehta, daughter of a religious Jain Businessman, Shri Harishbhai Mehta. And have two kids. 

 

 

Education and Training

 

He studied MBBS in NHL Municipal Medical College associated with VS Hospital. He further studied M.S. Ophthalmology at Maharashtra. His Head of Department Dr Shri Hanumant Karad and his Associate professor Dr Shri Gitte gave him an enormous exposure to the world of eye surgeries. He performed more than 3000 surgeries during the coarse of his 3 years of post graduation. This made him very well versed with all types of cataract surgeries even the most complicated ones. Also the glaucoma surgeries, pterygium surgeries etc

 

Post that he was trained by his father, Dr Shri Sanjay Gandhi, who taught him all the advances that are present in the field of ophthalmology.

 

 

Specialization and Expertise

 

Cataract :

He did more than 3000 cataract surgeries in the 3 years of Post graduation which most of the residents get around 300. Made him well versed with all structures of eye.

 

ICL : 

With experience of more than 1000 ICLs which very few Doctors have performed in India. He holds the expertise in doing the best and complicated ICL surgeries. 

 

Cornea Transplantation : 

He did his Observership at the world renowned WILLS EYE HOSPITAL, Philadelphia, USA under Dr Rapuano in Cornea. This gave him an upper hand in Cornea Transplant and ICL. 

 

Oculoplasty ( Plastic Surgery of Eyes) :

He also did observership with Dr Ramesh Murthy in Pune in Oculoplasty, which gave him an advantage in understanding the various cosmetic eye surgeries like Botox,  blepharoplasty, Fillers etc.

 

Other surgeries include glaucoma, pterygium, and iris reconstruction.

 

 

 

Work Experience

 

Having been in the field of ophthalmology for the last 14 years, there has been a commendation in the field with skills of all eye problems. He can operate all eye surgeries with the greatest skills available.

 

Patient Care Philosophy

 

“Only if required” is the philosophy of his patient care. He will never insist patients to get operated if the amount of cataract is less or if they don’t have any issue with vision as done by others.

 

 

 

Community Involvement

 

Don’t let the patient go if they can’t afford. Is how he does the community work. Any poor patient who wants to get operated by him is totally managed and will be operated.
